Vedran Misic - Artist, Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Wakeful Dreamer, Tempeh-Sandwich-Making Pro
Born and raised in Sarajevo, Bosnia, I've been lucky to have lived in New York City area since arriving in 1994 as a war refugee. Spent most of 2011 in beautiful Buenos Aires (Sí, hablo un poco de español. ¿Cómo estás?).
Drawing is my time of absolute peace and enjoyment. Working with ink markers ondoesn't leave much room for changing or making corrections once a line is drawn. It is a medium of drawing that has tamed my perfectionist nature over the years. In the end, any imperfections add up to give the art works a more dynamic and organic energy. I’m deeply intrigued with the systems of geometry and intricate patterns that are in nature, as well as within our own bodies. I love using the bright Indian inks of Faber-Castell's Pitt Artist Pens to capture the constantly changing energy that comprises us all, and everything that surrounds us. I want to awaken the child-like wonder and awe, to stimulate the viewer to think deeper and to keep imagining new ideas, and to appreciate the beauty and mystery of life.
*Subway Mind Trips* is a growing collection of black and white illustrations I draw only while commuting on NYC Subways. It all started in 2012 when I was taking an illustration class at the School of Visual Arts. Sketching ideas for the assigned projects during the commute to the class proved to be not only a fun way to pass the time, but also a great time to create art. Ever since then, I never leave a house without my sketchbook and a few black markers in tow. Most of these drawings are started without any particular idea in mind. Just as these trains rumble through deep, underground canals, my *Subway Mind Trips* drawings are blueprints of my own journeys into darker, more subconscious corners of my mind. I hold a BFA in Graphic Design from New York Institute of Technology, and have completed silkscreen, drawing and painting classes at School of Visual Arts. In 2006, I was a New York Cares Mural Artist for a public school in Queens, New York... And I really, really love to dance.
